I am writing this on Monday the 17th from the Senate Committee Room for Military Affairs and Border Control. I was asked to speak by Corazón Arizona, one of the groups that we have organized with in the past. They asked me a few hours ago if I’d be willing to don my collared shirt and show up to speak against SB1164, a state bill that makes local law enforcement cooperate with immigration enforcement, basically deputizing local law enforcement for fear-based immigration practices.
Honestly, I was so glad to be called. Like many of you, I’ve been agonizing as I’ve watched as all of these horrors are inflicted through our government. As I said in the sermon two weeks ago, I think we have an obligation and opportunity to speak as a faith tradition. I’m sitting next to ACLU reps, lobbyists, and local organizers, but WE have a unique voice to speak to the moral and ethical issues of this law.
It is hard to keep up with everything. It’s easy to show up when we’re asked to help. May our values of love land on open ears today.
